Art, Art, Culture and Haggis: It May not Seem It, But These are the Elements of a Harmonious Holiday: It May not Seem It, But These are the Elements of a Harmonious Holiday

Edinburgh is one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations, attracting roughly 13 million visitors each year; and it's no surprise as to why. With so many remarkable attributes - from an amazing theatre and art scene, to a rich cultural history - anyone who visits the city is sure to go home with something to talk about.

Edinburgh is renowned for its theatre scene; the city is, after all, home to the Fringe Festival - the largest performing arts festival in the world. Countless theatre productions can be found running in Edinburgh at any given time of the year; the city's main classic-production theatres include Usher Hall, the Royal Lyceum Theatre, King's Theatre, and the Playhouse, while the Traverse Theatre offers a more contemporary programme of plays.

In addition to theatres, Edinburgh boasts five National Galleries - so anyone who loves art is sure to be impressed. Tourists can even pay a visit to 'Dolly' - the first cloned mammal - which is now on display at the Royal Museum. Edinburgh also features a Writer's Museum in light of its rich literary tradition; some of the most famous writers who lived or worked in Edinburgh include Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and more recently, Ian Rankin and Irvine Welsh.

Ghost tours are particularly popular with tourists as well; beginning on the Royal Mile, visitors are guided down into the city's underground streets and vaults - relics of previous life in Edinburgh - while being relayed with stories about the ghosts which now occupy them. A ghost tour is one of the city's quintessential tourist attractions, and taking one is well worth your time - even if you don't believe in ghosts.

While tasting haggis is also a classic part of experiencing Scotland, one can't help but notice that Edinburgh is strewn with international restaurants. From Jamaican and Moroccan to Thai and Indian food, anyone who loves to try different flavours will be absolutely delighted. Edinburgh also carries a prominent 'coffee culture' by way of its countless charming cafes and coffee houses. Harry Potter fans can even visit the famous Elephant House café, where J.K. Rowling wrote her first Harry Potter book.

While the bustle of the city is truly amazing, there are various opportunities in and around Edinburgh for anyone who loves the peaceful outdoors. Arthur's Seat in Hollyrood Park, for example, offers spectacular hiking trails which lead to breathtaking views over the city; the Royal Botanical Garden is also a great place to spend an entire day or an afternoon. And if you'd like to take a scenic stroll in the city, head to Princes Street Gardens or up to Calton Hill, where you'll see the National Monument and get a great view of the city. If you'd like to get away from the bustle of the city for a bit, you can also easily arrange a day-tour up to the Highlands from Edinburgh.

While there are countless activities to partake in during the day, Edinburgh also boasts an exciting nightlife; from small, intimate pubs and live-music venues to elegant bars and clubs, anyone out for a night on the town will not be disappointed. The Grassmarket is lined with pubs and bars, while the New Town boasts the newest fashionable venues.

Other must-see attractions in the city include the Edinburgh Castle, the Scott Monument, St. Giles' Cathedral, the Royal Yacht Brittania and the National Monument on Calton Hill. But the city's most renowned attraction is undoubtedly the summertime Edinburgh Festival - a collection of independent festivals focusing on theatre, music, film and literature. The most famous of these include the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival, which hosts high profile productions and classic musical performances. The Festival begins in early August and last for four weeks - a period during which the city's population doubles.

Great Group Halloween Costume Ideas - Take Your Cue From Movies and Literature

If you are going mob handed to a party then you may want to coordinate your costumes into one theme. This will have a massive impact on other party goers when you arrive. Group costumes are also useful if you are going to a large venue so that you can spot each other in the crowd. Whatever your motivation, here are some great group Halloween costume ideas.

I've seen this many times before but it still looks great. Go as Alex and his Droogs from a Clockwork Orange. This film version of the novel was voluntarily withdrawn from public screening in Britain by director Stanley Kubrick, for fear that people would imitate it. He was probably more concerned with the violent aspect of it but today people love to dress up as Droogs.

A Droog costume is relatively simple. A white shirt and pants, Doc Martens boots and a bowler hat.  You can really get into the role by drinking milk and using some of the lingo but no tolchocking please.

In fact, you can get many great group Halloween costume ideas from films and literature.

How about D'Artagnan and the three Musketeers ? These are similarly themed costumes but each person can still have their own identity. A typical Musketeer costume involves a white puffy shirt, patterned tunic, pirate hat and a sword.

Robin Hood costumes would also work. Add Maid Marion and Friar Tuck and you have a few different costumes to go with Robin's Men in tights look.

TV shows and Super hero characters can also make for a good group theme. I think going as the trailer park boys would be a great idea. And it wouldn't be too hard to do either. If you like rum and coke then Julian is your man, Bubbles needs the big glasses and a few cheeseburgers for Randy.

If you really want to go for it then dress as the Munsters. Frankenstein, Vampira, Dracula and werewolf costumes will be needed for this group but you'll make a great impression at any Halloween party.

Film Tourism: What It Is, and How To Plan A Trip

Film tourism refers to the process of choosing a travel destination based on a movie that either references the location, was shot at the specific location, or was set in the location. Some claim it is a relatively new form of tourism, while others maintain that this repeats the long-established practice of reading about a location and then going to visit, based on literature. Regardless, it is a great opportunity to combine the love of film with the love of travel. Take a look at the following guide to determine just how you might frame your next travel adventure based on a film you love:

Think about where you want to go and why.

It should be easy to pick a place to travel and just go - or is it? When a person works hard and has limited time to choose a destination, it is understandable that you want to choose the perfect place. Film tourism is a great avenue for choosing a destination. Many people watch classics from their childhood and feel nostalgia. Others try foreign films or exciting adventure flicks. Whatever your choice in cinematic art is, you can find inspiration.

Think about what kind of places you have seen in movies and how it made you feel. There is no wrong answer, as long as you have an answer. Beaches, mountains, specific countries can all lead to new experiences, if you plan well. So think about a place you have seen in a movie, and think about what your end-goal for vacation is. Also consider whether you want to relax, explore, or challenge yourself. These goals should affect your choice in travel venue.

Consider the film. Or consider your reasons for wanting to consider a film.

There is a phrase popular in film tourism: Reel to real. This references the ability to see something on a screen and then translate those feelings and that experience into a physical visit through vacation. There is a lot of merit to translating a film to the real world. In order to make the most of a vacation planned around a film, it is best to consider the most important aspects of what drew you to a film. Was it a sense of nostalgia? Was it the scenery? New Zealand is a place in particular that has felt the draw of the tourism sector after the beauty of "The Hobbit" and other such films attracted people to the countryside. Was it a culinary masterpiece that had you wanting to savor the cuisine of a different place?

Contact a professional service that can plan the trip for you.

Because film tourism has really taken off, there are some fantastic film vacation packages available. These include pre-planned trips revolving around a specific film or group of films or even a location that is famous for several different movies. A travel firm that is well-versed in the different complexities in scheduling a trip can really help you decide what you want from a trip and how to get it.

High School Students Fail to Pass History and Literature - How Can You Help Your Kids Succeed?

Audiences are usually delighted when late night comedy hosts wander onto the street to ask passers by basic history questions. We think it is hysterical when people fail to answer "Who was buried in Grant's Tomb?" or "When was the War of 1812?" The laughter dies however, when one considers a 2008 report produced by Common Core, in which they surveyed a random sampling of 1,200 seventeen year olds across the country. The report revealed some disturbing facts.

Thirty-three percent of the students could not identify the document wherein Americans are guaranteed their freedom of speech. Forty-nine percent could not identify the political party attacked by McCarthyism. A whopping fifty-seven percent could not correctly place the American Civil War within the second half of the nineteenth century, while forty percent didn't know that WWI took place within the first half of the twentieth century. And that was only the beginning.

If, as the report declares, "the first mission of public schooling in a democratic society is to equip every young person for the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship," then our public school system seems to be failing.

So what's to do? Blame our teachers and schools? That's probably not fair. After all, America's schools are over crowed, under funded, and sadly hampered by scholastic standards that put creative and civic instruction on the proverbial back burner. Just today, I spoke with a local high school curriculum coordinator who bemoaned, "I have plenty of content, but no time to teach it." Hardly a surprise when US Department of Education data shows that "the amount of weekly instructional time devoted to history and social studies in grades one to six fell by 22 percent between 1988 and 2004. The amount of time devoted to "English and reading arts" increased substantially during these same years, but there is reason to believe that most or all of this additional time was spent on basic reading skills, not literature."

did notice that a segment of students who consistently scored higher had a few important aspects of their lives in common. One, they had at least one college educated parent. Two, they were more likely to have read at least one literary book not assigned in school. Three, they were more likely to have visited a museum or attended a cultural event with their family and friends. In other words, parental and family involvement in the cultural and historical education of a child tends to raise that child's grade point average by one level, sometimes two. The report seems to confirm what many parents and teachers have known for years-the love of history and literature begins at home. Knowledge of our past is a gift we receive from our parents when they take the time to share their passions with us.

So what are parents to do if they have no college education? What if they have no money for museums and theatre? What if they work three jobs and only see their kids a few minutes a day? Luckily, quality of time is truly more important than quantity. If you know your kids are studying US History, rent and watch John Adams with them. Ask them what they think of a bunch of rebels deciding to start their own country. You don't need to test them; just expose them to your culture's history and literature and then talk with them about it. If you watch a film about South Africa, be sure to get out a map and let them know where the country is. If they are watching a movie about WWII, look for a timeline that tells them what came before and after. Kids are naturally curious, and parents can't afford to wait for schools to try and cram a lifetime of learning into one semester. If you don't have the time, knowledge, or money, look for a mentor who does. Your community and your kids will thank you for it.

I personally would like to see Historybuster Clubs sprout up across America. What is a Historybuster Club? Designed by a history teacher, Historybusters provides parents with the tools they need to hook their kids on history early, encouraging active learning as well as parental and community involvement in the education of our children.

A Short History of English Movies and Philippine Literature

The history of English-movie is very old dating nearly back to the same time as other most of the European countries and America. While Philippine literature is also very old and most of the ancient literature of Philippines dates from ancestral worship and legends which were brought by the first settlers from Taiwan.

In 1913, American movies and actors had infiltrated deep into England and this fashion became so popular that a London based film company started making films in the UK casting American actors.

The Philippine islands were a Spanish colony from early 1500s and were controlled by the US in the first half of the 20th century. The written literature was present much earlier than the Spanish colonial period. Because Spain was in a grip of investigation, the church doctrine passed a decree to destroy the Philippines written records and be replaced by Catholic teachings only.

There were problems with the English-movie industry for maintaining its pace with the progressing technology. Because of this problem, there was technical comparison of English-movie industry with its European and American counterparts.

The English movies were also greatly impacted by the theatre culture. The presentations of English movies were similar to the style of screen play as stage play. Many English movies ended up in the same actors and sets that were used in the stage plays.

The First World War was also a cause of problems for the English movie industry. The audiences were more attached to American movies and they were praised a lot. The downfall of English movies continued despite the infusing of private sponsorships into the English movie industry until it finally ceased completely in 1924.

Through the first half of the 20th century till this time, most Philippine poetry and literature was written in Spanish. José Rizal is a Philippine national hero and considered the father of Philippine literature. Although his work was written and published in Spanish language but it has inspired many Filipinos. José Rizal was also a model of civilized living and he had also studied medicine and philosophy and was awarded for his work.

The downfall of English film industry did not remain forever and the dedicated efforts of some film producers and actors luckily revived the English movie industry in 1927. Many Philippine writers excelled to the level that story writing and poetry became a major cultural export. Although the professional writing in the Philippines is nowhere near as advanced as other English speaking nations but several awards are offered annually that recognize the excellence of Philippine literature.
